January is Thyroid Awareness Month, and, yes, there’s a ribbon. According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) website, a blue paisley ribbon was chosen because of its resemblance to a cross-section of thyroid follicles.
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. It influences the function of many of the body’s most important organs, including the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and skin.
The AACE estimates that 15 million Americans have undiagnosed thyroid problems. Symptoms include joint pain, fatigue, weight changes, depression or “brain fog,” and hair and skin problems.
