The search for the perfect red lipstick can be exhausting. But one group that always rocks the right red is the Rockettes. For these gals, red lip color is more than a beauty accessory — it’s one of their trademarks.
We asked Rockettes Morgan Hartley, Lindsay Thomas, Laura Iberg and Jeanne Logan Cargill — who told us they like MAC red lipstick for their shows — to pucker up and give their seal of approval (or not) to some other popular reds.
All four Rockettes will perform in the famous “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” in December at The Straz.
Nuance Color Vibrance Lipstick by Salma Hayek, #175 Paprika
Available at CVS and cvs.com; around $8 to $9 a tube
“Ultra-rich, creamy color leaves lips softer, smoother and fuller in a single sweep. Formulated with vitamin E nourishment and moisture-lock protection.”
Morgan says: I love this Color Vibrance —Paprika shade of lipstick from Nuance by Salma Hayak! Having used it for four days during a media tour, I definitely feel this lipstick is worthy! The shade is a deeper, darker, dramatic red, so it is eye-catching in photos. This lipstick will not fade into a pink haze; it stays bright red! It was relatively long-lasting as I only needed to reapply once every three to four hours. It has a nice creamy texture and never dried my lips out. This lipstick will be a part of my Rockette makeup routine from now on! Thanks, Salma Hayek!
Morgan Hartley hails from Birmingham, Ala., and has been a Rockette since 2009. She loves children, traveling and recently discovered sailing.
Milani Color Statement lipstick, #07 Best Red
Available at Walgreens, Publix Supermarkets and CVS; online at cvs.com, walgreens.com and drugstrore.com; around $4.50 to $6 a tube
“Make a statement without saying a word! True Instant Color. One stroke, full coverage application. This next generation lipstick gives the ultimate in color, texture and finish. The lightweight creamy formula contains Vitamins A, C, & E to moisturize and nourish lips.”
Lindsay says: Milani’s Best Red lipstick is a very flattering and attractive shade of red! It has a pink undertone and is slightly brighter than your basic red, which I loved! When I first applied it, I noticed that it went on smoothly and it didn’t have a dry feeling. I would definitely say that this is a long-wear lipstick, I only had to reapply once toward the end of the day. It also had a really nice fruity smell to it, which is a plus! I will definitely be wearing this lipstick as a part of my Rockette look for this year!
Lindsay Thomas is from Butler, N.J. She’s been a Rockette in 2009 and enjoys traveling, Gyrotonics for fitness, voice lessons, competitive dance judging and trying new foods. She’s also busy planning her wedding.
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick, #830 Rich Girl Red
Available at most retailers and online, including Target, Walgreens, CVS and Publix, drugstore.com and ultabeauty.com; around $5 to $8
“Infused with mega-moisturizers to seal in color and softness.”
Laura says: When first looking at this product, I was taken off guard by the color on the sticker and the actual lipstick. The label makes it seem more of an “orange” tone rather than “red.” After unwrapping and applying the color to my lips, I would definitely say this wears toward the more “coral” shade of red.
It was very sheer, which for everyday use is probably what I would be looking for; but for performing up to four shows a day, I need something that is going to be strong and bold, and able to last through my many costume changes. I will say that it was very shiny and felt moisturizing, but I had to put on many layers for the color to read, and after about an hour of wear, it started to feel cakey. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick is nice for everyday or just a touch of shine, but for the great stage at Radio City Music Hall, I don’t believe it would react to each and every seat in the house.
Laura Iberg is a native of Highland, Ill., and lives in Orlando, where she performs in the off-season at the Treasure Tavern Dinner Show. A Rockette since 2008, she enjoys yoga, Pilates and baking.
Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate, #110
Available at retailers and online at Target, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, CVS, ulta.com and drugstore.com; around $3.30 to $6 a tube
“The first lipstick collection created by Kate Moss. High intensity color for up to 8 hours. Formula infused with Black Diamonds, reflects light like never before. Captures all the flair, edge and timelessness of Kate’s unique look.”
Jeanne says: Although the color label looks more like a brick red, this is actually a great classic red. When I’m on the stage performing as a Rockette, I need a long-lasting red lipstick that can withstand nine quick costume changes … and don’t forget the 300 kicks per show! This Lasting Finish by Kate really did the trick. Many long-lasting lipsticks tend to be on the dry side; I found this one left my lips creamy rather than sticky and clumpy. While I wouldn’t wear this shade all the time in my everyday life, it would also be great for a classic night out on the town with your favorite little black dress.
Jeanne Logan Cargill, a native of Bradenton, now lives in Jersey City, N.J., where in the off-season she teaches Pilates and various fitness classes in the Hoboken/Jersey City area. She’s been a Rockette since 2009.
