Free flu shot event postponed

UPDATE: This event has been postponed and will be rescheduled, The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County says. We will let you know when the new date is announced.

It's not too early - or too late - to get your flu shot this season and this weekend you can get it for free.

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County will be offering free flu vaccinations on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2511 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa.

The shots are available on a first-come, first-served basis for everyone ages 3 and up and will be available while supplies last. The team will be armed with 450 doses of the vaccine on site.

“There is currently some flu going around. It's the perfect time to get a shot before Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, the times when people come together” says Steve Huard with the Hillsborough County Health Department.

While everyone should get a flu vaccine this season, it's especially important for some people to get vaccinated, including the following:

* People with compromised health and immunity

* Pregnant women.

* People younger than 5 years and older than 65

* People who live with or care for others with compromised health or those under 6 months in age

* Health care personnel.

Symptoms of the flu that should be monitored include headache, fever, severe cough, runny nose, or muscle aches.
