Registration open for Ritz Ybor's Ultimate Bands competition
The Ritz Ybor's annual Ultimate Bands Series is looking for local musicians who want to compete for the title of the Tampa Bay area's ultimate band and more than $3,000 in prizes. Every Wednesday at 7 p.m. from Aug. 14 to 28, five different bands will compete to win a spot at the fourth annual Ultimate Bands Series finals, taking place at the Ritz Ybor on Sept. 21. A panel of judges will offer commentary and choose which three bands will advance to the finals based on audience applause and judge's scoring, as each band performs two original songs and one cover by a predetermined artist. In addition, one band from the semifinals will be chosen solely by the judges as the "judge's pick" to advance to the finals.Specific prizes haven't been announced, but past prizes have included prominent New Year's Eve gigs, and the opportunity to open for a national artist during an upcoming concert at The Ritz. Previous winners of the Ultimate Bands Series include Mighty Mongo (2010), The James-Lange Theory (2011) and Rising Down (2012). Bands can register to compete at http://ultimatebands2013.eventbrite.com. The competition is open to any music artist of any genre, including solo artists, who have at least two original songs to submit at the time of registration. The deadline to register is Aug. 2. For those who want to watch, admission for the semifinals and finals will cost $5 at the door.
