Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Keyshawn Johnson was among 12 celebrities named Wednesday to this season’s “Dancing With the Stars” cast.
Johnson, now a football analyst for ESPN, becomes the second player from the Bucs’ 2002 Super Bowl team to appear on the ABC dancing competition. Warren Sapp was a runner-up during the 2008 fall season.
Also in the cast is actress Valerie Harper, 74, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in January but announced in August the disease was close to remission. The former “Rhoda” star recently filmed a movie and joined a Nickelodeon reunion of “The Mary Tyler Moore ” show cast.
ABC also added an injection of youth to the competition with reality stars Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” and Jack Osbourne, son of heavy metal rock legend Ozzy Osbourne.
Other contestants are Bill Nye, the “Science Guy”; “Pretty Little Liars” actor Brant Daugherty; singer and actress Christina Milian; “Showgirls” and “Saved by the Bell” actress Elizabeth Berkley; “High School Musical” actor Corbin Bleu; “Glee” star Amber Riley; country comic Bill Engvall; and “King of Queens” actress Leah Remini.
The show’s 17th season begins at 8 p.m. Sept. 16.
This season, “DWTS” transitions to a one-night, two-hour format on Mondays in which judges’ scores are combined with the previous week’s public vote to eliminate a couple at the end of each broadcast. Previously, the competition typically featured two nights per week, with a couple voted off on the second show.
The cast was revealed on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
