Children grasp a vast bead booty at parade

TAMPA — Thousands of tiny pirates shivered their little timbers Saturday at this year’s Children’s Gasparilla Parade along Bayshore Boulevard.

The young swashbucklers and their parents spent the afternoon collecting their treasure: the much-coveted Gasparilla beads.

The multicolored strands were tossed off parade floats by the handful and adorned the necks of almost every pint-sized pirate.

Four-year-old Joahvanni Moussa was ecstatic when he got a strand of red beads, his favorite color.

“I can’t wait to go home and put them on all my toys,” he said about his treasure hoard.

The Children’s Gasparilla Parade has been a Tampa tradition since 1947 and marks the start of the Gasparilla season, which continues next weekend with the Gasparilla Invasion and Parade of Pirates.

This year’s Children’s Parade featured more than 300 krewes, community groups and local businesses and organizations.

The parade route stretched down Bayshore from Bay-to-Bay Boulevard to Watrous Avenue.
