With a face that has been compared to Jabba the Hutt and the comic strip character Ziggy, the blobfish now holds the title of “ugliest endangered animal on the planet.”
The deep-sea-dwelling fish received the most votes in an online poll organized by “The Ugly Animal Preservation Society” (a traveling comedy show put together by British comic Simon Watt), and the British National Science and Engineering Competition.
According to its website, the society is “dedicated to raising the profile of some of Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children.”
As the winner, the blobfish is now the society’s official mascot.
Comedian Paul Foot campaigned for the blobfish in an online video, saying he saw more than just a gelatinous blob that lives off the coast of Australia and Tasmania.
“The eyes are kind and very wise,” Foot said in the video. “There is a brain in there.”
Other endangered animals that contended for the title included the axolotl, the Titicaca water frog, the pig-nosed turtle, the proboscis monkey and the British bat.
