Flying Boat Brewing Co. joins burgeoning St. Petersburg craft beer scene

St. Petersburg beer aficionados now have another option with Tuesday's opening of the Tampa Bay area's latest craft brewery.

Around noon, Flying Boat Brewing Co. announced the opening of its 11,000-square-foot facility at 1776 11th Ave. N on its Facebook page.

"The paper is down. We're an hour away from take off. #ItsAPlaneNotABoat," the brewery posted Tuesday morning, ahead of its opening.

The brewery also announced that a portion of proceeds from beer sales will be donated to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.

Flying Boat — owned by Glenn Zakany, son Tanner Zakany and son-in-law Josh Perian — joins an already burgeoning St. Petersburg beer scene. The city already home to a half-dozen breweries, including 3 Daughters Brewing, Green Bench Brewing and Cycle Brewing.

During its groundbreaking last April, Perian said Flying Boat planned to open with six to eight original beers on tap.

The beer will be brewed by Tyler Singletary, previously withi Southern Brewing & Wine Making in Tampa.

The brewery is named for the aircraft in the world's first commercial airline flight, from St. Petersburg to Tampa, thanks to aviation pioneer Tony Jannus.
