Evangelical University and Seminary will celebrate Labor Day this year with a barbecue fundraiser to benefit students and scholarships.
The fundraiser began six years ago as a way to raise money for the school while commemorating the holiday throughout the community. The barbecue will be held Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Plant City’s First Baptist Church.
“We’ll be serving some for lunch and hopefully they’ll come back for supper, too,” said J. Myrle Henry, a member of the board of trustees for Evangelical University and Seminary.
The menu will include barbecue chicken, coleslaw and baked beans. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children, with meals being available for dine in or carry out. An assortment of homemade desserts can be purchased for an additional $1.
Evangelical University and Seminary, which celebrated it’s sixth anniversary May 2, was founded as a school that was open to anyone who wanted to learn.
“It’s really good for a lot of lay pastors who don’t have a lot of opportunity to go to seminary,” Henry said.
He described the school as successful but acknowledged that there was a need to raise money for scholarships through community fundraisers. “We were just looking for things to do to raise money, so we started this barbecue and it was one of the first things we did,” he said, adding that it was so successful they decided to make it an annual event. “The first year it was very successful and we’ve had it ever since,” Henry said.
Tickets for the barbecue fundraiser are available for purchase at locations throughout Plant City: the office of Plant City’s First Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Dover, Bethany Baptist Church and Evangelical University and Seminary.
