It's hard to render “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak speechless, but that's exactly what a contestant did Wednesday with one of the more unlikely puzzle solutions in the show's history.
Sajak couldn't have predicted the outcome when Emil stepped up in during the bonus round to identify a “thing.”
After being given the requisite R-S-T-L-N-E letters to solve the three-word puzzle, Emil chose H-M-D-O, which yielded no more hints.
So in Sajak's attempts to encourage Emil, all he could manage was, “Uh, this looks tough to me. You have 10 seconds but I don't know. Keep talking, maybe the right thing will pop out. Good luck.”
Unbelievably, the “right thing” came out immediately, as Emil guessed “New Baby Buggy” before sounding out some other possibilities.
It took a couple of seconds before the correct answer flashed on the screen, drawing a surprised shrug from co-host Vanna White and an incredulous look from Sajak, prompting him to frisk him in mock suspicion before revealing Emil had just won $45,000, bringing his winnings to $63,099.
Not bad for a desperation attempt at answer.
