Video: ‘It’s Always Sunny’’s Charlie Day gives perfect commencement speech

Don’t be afraid to fail and don’t wait for success to come to you.

Those were two of the takeaways from a hilarious and surprisingly inspiring commencement speech delivered by “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” star Charlie Day.

Day gave the speech at his alma mater, Merimack College, where he also received an honorary doctorate.

“I plan to begin writing my own prescriptions immediately,” he joked.

Day recounted the story of his early days in New York, when he was faced with a dilemma shortly after graduation: take an opportunity to join the cast of the sitcom, or pass on guaranteed money to work on a homemade version of what eventually became “It’s Always Sunny.”

He chose to bet on himself — a smart move in retrospect. The sitcom, “Life On A Stick,” made it five episodes. “It’s Always Sunny” just signed on for its 11th and 12th seasons.

“Don’t wait for your break, make your break,” Day said.
