Kim’s Wednesday musings: Who’s in the Brat Pack?

OK, we just spent 15 minutes — OK, maybe five minutes discussing (debating) the Brat Pack.

This was prompted when I decided to open yesterday’s mail and Rob Lowe’s latest book “Love Life” fell out of a padded envelope.

That’s when my Pop Rocks’ partner Clarisa confessed she was so crazy about Rob Lowe when she was younger, she could have been headed for a padded cell. OK, I made that up. But she did love the boy.

But back to the pack.

We discussed whether Mare Winningham, who played Wendy in “St. Elmo’s Fire” (and gets her one night with Billy ‑ played by Lowe) is a member of the Brat Pack.

Wikipedia, the online source written by people I imagine never change out of their pajama pants, declares: The “core” members were Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.

IMDB, the more “serious” database for all things related to movies and TV says that Winningham is a member of the “original” Brat Pack. Though, as our podmate Janine declared, she went on to never be in another movie. Which, of course, is wrong but I have to be caffeinated to take on Janine.

Anywho, to me the Brat Pack will always be those in “The Breakfast Club.”

But ultimately, it seems, the Brat Pack is actually a big club which many want to be a member. Except Winningham who apparently left the pack behind after “St. Elmo’s” and never starred in another movie with the “core” group.

Or at least that’s what the guy in the plaid flannel pants typed on the Internet, so it must be true.
