German statesman Otto von Bismark once said that politics is the art of the possible. It's also about making the masses happy. And few things make people as happy as eating macaroni and cheese.
Which explains why Mayor Bob Buckhorn will host the inaugural Mac & Cheese Throwdown from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.
More than 25 restaurants will compete for three awards: classic mac, brews and mac (Beer and cheese. Yum.), and wine and cheese (you may now raise your pinky).

Chef Greg Baker of The Refinery will head a group of judges who will pick a “People's Choice Award.” All mac & cheese samples will be sold on behalf of the Friends of the Riverwalk, a local nonprofit that works to improve and enhance the Tampa Riverwalk.
The event and entertainment are free and open to the public.
Unlike the mayor's St. Patrick's Day festival, during which the Hillsborough River is dyed green, there will be no river of cheese. Maybe next year.
