Pro at Silver Dollar course wants players to have fun
ODESSA - Bobby Capobianco has a very simple way to run a golf course. As the head golf professional at Silver Dollar Golf Club, Capobianco has played in PGA Tour events, given countless lessons and dreamed of a shot at the PGA Tour. But, to Capobianco, it isn’t about hitting the perfect shot, cashing the biggest check, or playing the back 9 at Augusta on Sunday. It’s all very simple.“The golfers come to the Silver Dollar to have fun,” Capobianco said. “My job is to make sure they have fun.” Capobianco has a long history with Silver Dollar, as well with several other area courses. He was one of the first at The Eagles, next door to Silver Dollar, before moving over to Silver Dollar. After 10 years at local clubs such as Lansbrook, Belleview Biltmore and Bardmoor, he came back home to Silver Dollar eight years ago. The course had fallen into some hard times and it was up to Capobianco to make things right again. “I always loved this course,” Capobianco said. “They were saying they would be making a lot of changes and I wanted to be a part of it. We found a superintendent who has done a great job and now we are right where we want to be. There’s still work to do, but we are a lot better off than we were eight years ago.” Capobianco said that, when he came back to Silver Dollar, one of the first things he noticed was that the tee boxes weren’t level. Every tee shot was a downhill or uphill lie. Now all 27 holes at Silver Dollar have at least a level tee shot and Capobianco said more changes are on the way. Capobianco has been golfing since his parents taught him at the age of 3. He excelled quickly and was a junior college All-America. He started qualifying for PGA Tour events although he never earned his Tour card. He played the Greater Hartford Open in 1991 and said his game is still competitive with anyone but, at 60, he isn’t thinking about the Champions Tour. His main concern now is to bring Silver Dollar back onto the list of elite golf courses in the Tampa Bay area. “We have great prices, great service and great conditions,” Capobianco said. “We are being rediscovered here. As soon as you see it, you will see the effort that has been put into it. This is just a start.” Capobianco said when he realized the course was willing to spend some money to reclaim its old glory, he said he was sold. “Everything here is turning around,” Capobianco said. “We recognized that there were some things that needed to be fixed and it’s getting done.” Even after being away for more than 10 years, Capobianco said he always had a spot in his heart for the Silver Dollar. “I always loved this course,” he said. “I put the experience I learned at other places and saw how great this place can be. I learned a lot when I was away, but I hope to use that experience. If you are involved with golf, this place is a dream.” CHIP SHOTS The Big Ten Alumni Clubs of Tampa Bay will host its annual 2013 charity golf tournament at Pasadena Yacht and Country Club on April 27 with registration at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The event will support the Special Ops Wounded Warriors Foundation of Tampa.
