CARROLLWOOD – While members of Anytime Fitness enjoy 24/7 access to the Northdale branch, it’s not every day the gym opens its doors to the entire community. But, that’s what will happen Jan. 28, when the facility plays host to its first-ever community appreciation night.
The event offers not only a chance for area residents to check out the gym for free, but also a number of classes and giveaways anyone can take part in. Owner Jim Burke said the event is a way for the gym to give back to the community while raising awareness about fitness, nutrition and personal safety. He hopes the Jan. 28 event will just be the first of many.
“I want to partner with healthcare pros, health and fitness pros to bring those kinds of educational resources” to the community, Burke said.
Located at 15457 N. Dale Mabry Highway, the Northdale gym has been a part of the community for six years. When the facility recently expanded to include a large group exercise room, Burke realized the space was perfect for community outreach, too.
During regular operating hours, the new group fitness room serves as a place for live classes and also Fitness on Demand group courses that are offered around the clock. Fitness on Demand provides members of Anytime Fitness Northdale with access to prerecorded group workouts that include boxing, aerobics, yoga and more. The concept enables Anytime members to take part in group exercise classes at their convenience – not on a schedule. It works by enabling members to choose their workout, which is then broadcast on a projection screen.
“That room is just amazing,” said member Larry Bennett. “It opens up a whole new branch of things (to do).”
The group exercise room will serve as a classroom during the Jan. 28 community appreciation event, which kicks off at 5 p.m. and runs until 8. The first 100 guests who arrive will be treated to gift bags filled with items from local businesses. There will also be door prizes and chance drawings staged throughout the evening.
Three workshops are planned for the event. The first, Proper Exercising Techniques, taught by Anytime Fitness’ own Eric Carter and Joshua Hallman, kicks off at 5 p.m. Participants can also take part in a self-defense seminar at 5:45 p.m. led by Richard Liebespach of Self-Protection Concepts and learn about healthy eating and nutrition courtesy of the folks from the Flight Lounge restaurant at 6:30 p.m.
The gym also has a health and fitness workshop night planned Feb. 11. That even takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. and features a number of presenters, including a plant-based pharmacist, a yoga therapist, fitness coaches and personal chefs.
