Broward woman hit by suspected celebratory gunfire
FORT LAUDERDALE - A South Florida woman was wounded by what authorities believe was celebratory gunfire. The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that 26-year-old April Johnson was outside her brother's home watching Fourth of July fireworks Thursday night when she felt a sharp pain in her left leg. She looked down and saw blood coming from her upper thigh. Rescue workers responded and took the woman to a nearby hospital, where medical staff confirmed she had been shot. Doctors didn't remove the bullet. They released her and told her to schedule a follow-up with her doctor. BSO detectives believe Johnson was hit by a stray bullet that was unlawfully fired into the air.Officials around the state made their annual attempt earlier this week to educate the public on the dangers of shooting guns haphazardly into the air.
