Knives sharpened for two local charities

BRANDON A knife-sharpening fundraising event for charity will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium, 2080 Badlands Drive.

The Trey Curry Foundation and the Brandon Foundation are sponsoring the fundraiser and will let attendees decide which foundation gets their donations.

For $3 per knife, the Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium’s skilled, professional knife sharpeners will restore the cutting abilities of the blades. They will work on only straightedged, non-serrated knives.

Dave and Karen West have owned the Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium since they opened their first store in 1995 in Brandon. They sell kitchen tools and teach cooking classes. They also support area nonprofits such as A Kid’s Place, Nativity Outreach Food Bank and Friends of Joshua House Foundation, as well as helping the community by hosting knife sharpening for charity events, contests, celebrity chef demonstrations and parties and renting their facility for photo shoots and commercials.

The Brandon Foundation, since its establishment in 2003, has brought together individuals and businesses throughout the greater Brandon community to develop resources to meet local needs. The foundation helps support more than 60 registered charities, including the A Kid’s Place, the American Cancer Society, Boy and Girl scouts, Brandon Outreach Clinic, DACCO, the Emergency Care Help Organization, Lisa’s Pink Petals of Hope, The Spring of Tampa Bay, The Sylvia Thomas Center and Young Life.

After Clif and Terry Curry’s son Clifton Conrad “Trey” Curry III passed away unexpectedly in 2008, the family started a foundation in his honor. They transformed their loss into a vehicle for helping abused and neglected children by sponsoring the Trey Curry Home at A Kid’s Place in Brandon.
