DOVER — Time is running out to register for the 16th annual Teenage Battle of the Bands, sponsored by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department.
The contest will take place Friday or Saturday, Oct. 18 or 19, at the Hillsborough County Fair, 4810 E. State Road 60. Times and additional dates will be determined by the number of bands competing.
Band members must be Hillsborough County residents, 13 to 20 years old, with only one member as old as 20.
Any kind of band may participate; however, judging will focus on guitars, drums and vocals as well as showmanship, originality and preparation.
Only 15 bands will be accepted into the competition. There is a $50 entry fee per band. To pre-qualify, each band must call Joe Soletti of the Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department at (813) 376-5778.
Many bands send him links to online videos of their performances. But if a band doesn’t have a video, that’s OK.
“I don’t want to turn away anybody who wants to participate,” said Soletti.
The first-place winner will receive five free hours at Morrisound recording studio. The second-place winner will get three free hours at the studio.
In 2012, the greater-Brandon-area band Obskurity won first place. Two members, brothers Beau and Chase Cleaves (Riverview High School); Lynne Keegan Conner (Strawberry Crest High School) and Teagan Byrnes (Lennard High School) met while enrolled at Music Showcase in Brandon.
In second place was 20 Years North, and only one-tenth of a point behind them was The Hanging Chads.
Winners from previous years include Culprit in 2011, Styx of Fire in 2010, Rising Down in 2009 and Envy in 2008.
