HCC Brandon honor society wins awards at convention

BRANDON - The Alpha Lambda Alpha chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Hillsborough Community College-Brandon organized the annual Florida Regional Convention March 1 to 3 in Fort Lauderdale – and then came home with 10 awards. More than 300 students from more than 30 Florida community colleges attended the conference for the honor society for students at two-year colleges. “Chapters gather to share knowledge gained over the year, promote their service projects and participate in the Florida Regional Awards,” said Michael Odu, chapter adviser. Teams hosted workshops on scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service, and presented seminars about succeeding in college, teambuilding and interviewing.
Each chapter submitted an essay about a yearlong project to help its school and an honors-in-action research project about the Culture of Competition. Only the Florida region “offers individual creative awards in addition to chapter team awards,” said Odu. Chapter members submitted “individual creative works in the categories of art, speech, music, poetry, short stories and essay.” Brandon-campus award winners included Ebonee Carpenter, chapter president, who won first place in the speech competition and received a distinguished chapter officer award, as well as Nick Tumi, who earned first place in music; Guelmarie Davila in art; Margel Lamb, first place in essay; and Elsi Verdecia won distinguished chapter member. Odu won the continued excellence award for advisers; Alpha Lambda Alpha was recognized as a distinguished chapter and its executive board as a distinguished officer team. Hillsborough Community College-Brandon President Carlos Soto received a distinguished service award from the Florida region for his support of Phi Theta Kappa. The society’s international convention April 4 to 6 in San Jose, Calif., will feature tennis legend and social-justice pioneer Billie Jean King as keynote speaker.
