BRANDON — When Barber Jesse Lima’s son was just two, he got the scare of his life. The doctors told him his son very well may have leukemia.
It turned out to be a false alarm, but it was a near miss that has always rattled him, he said.
On Nov. 16, Lima and his Brandon barber shop, Element of D’zign, is teaming up with the Xotics Hairbattle Tour and the Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa to raise money for the non-profit.
The Children’s Cancer Center focuses on helping families cope with childhood cancer and other blood-related diseases, including sickle cell anemia.
Lima is asking for a minimum donation of $5 per hair cut, but hoping people will open up their wallets for this cause.
The hair cutting fund-raiser will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shop is located at 911 W. Brandon Blvd. There will be food and drinks, gifts and a demonstration by students at the Earl Harris Karate Academy.
“We are trying to raise at least $1,000 and all of the money goes right to the Children’s Cancer Center,” Lima said. “Last year, we raised $300 at the spur of the moment, so we are hoping for more this year.”
“I have 12 barbers in my shop and also have some coming from various states. The Xotics Hairbattle Tour is the next day in Tampa, so they will come and donate their time to cut hair.”
