BRANDON — When Heidi Quinn decided to set up a German deli not far from her Bloomingdale home, she was surprised by how many German natives quickly found her little place, tucked inside the Rainbow Food Store at 4322 Bell Shoals Road.
“I had no idea there were so many Germans in the area,” she said with a laugh, showing off her cold case, filled with Old World staples like Bierschinken, Schinkenwurst and Jadgwurst, with a stack of freshly baked broetchen rolls sitting on top.
“I had my own deli in Germany for years and had worked in the best deli in the country in Munich, so when I walked into this store and saw the space was empty, I asked about it and they said yes.” That’s when she opened Heidi’s Gourmet Hut.
Quinn, working with her brother-in-law and business partner Charles Quinn, is serving up German burgers called Frikadellen broetchen for $3.99, a Bratwurst Broetchen, or hoagie for $3.99 and all types of salads, from a cucumber salad to a German potato salad and even traditional meat salads typically found in her home country.
In addition to making sandwiches and such, the hut also caters.
“German people come in here and they are like kids in a candy store when they see what I offer,” said Heidi Quinn, who also bakes apple streudle and serves it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for $2.99. She said she did a lot of research to ensure she could get authentic German foods.
Claudia Adams, of Wesley Chapel, found out about Heidi’s Gourmet Hut through relatives that live in nearby Bloomingdale.
“I found out that Heidi is from the same place in Germany as I am, Ludwigshafen,” she said with a laugh.
“I’m always really happy to find a good German deli,” Adams said, adding that she has tried Quinn’s German potato salad, cold cuts and the cucumber salad. “German delis are difficult to find around here and I don’t want to drive all the way to Sarasota,” she said.
Charles Quinn has added the American touches, putting Cuban sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches on the menu, as well. “That’s why we call it German food with an American twist,” he said. “I’m the American twist.”
Heidi’s Gourmet Hut is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
