Durant made sure Hillsborough County wasn't shut out of the Class 6A-District 8 title game.
Left-hander Austin Buck went the distance, Brad Sabourin hit a three-run home run and Christian Lopez made a stellar defensive play for the final out as the Cougars knocked off Sarasota 7-5 in a semifinal matchup at East Bay.
Durant will face Lakeland, which defeated Sarasota Riverview 6-0 in the other semifinal, in Thursday's district championship.
Sabourin's homer to left in the third gave the Cougars (13-11) a 5-0 lead, but the Sailors, who on Wednesday ended Jesuit's perfect season, steadily chipped away.
Sarasota (19-7) had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the seventh, and Sean Hurley hit a rocket up the middle that likely would have tied the game. However, Lopez, the Cougars' second baseman, dove to his right and made a backhanded stop and fired to first in time to end the game, putting Durant into the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and keeping Sarasota out of the postseason for the first time since 1992.
"He's a heck of a ballplayer," Durant coach Butch Valdes said of Lopez, who also had two hits. "That's what everybody's been doing for us. Whether it's young guys or older guys, they're giving everything they've got."
Buck allowed 12 hits while striking out four to earn the win. Greg Ibarra went 3-for-3, Trey Oest had two hits and three RBIs and Jake Burges had two hits and an RBI for Durant.
3A-11: Klosicki carries Crusaders
ST. PETERSBURG - Ryan Klosicki has come full circle.
Last summer, the Tampa Catholic pitcher injured his labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder and underwent surgery. When he returned to pitching, he was on a strict pitch count.
Tuesday, the senor recorded his first complete game of the season, tossing a four-hit shutout for a 2-0 win over Berkeley Prep in the Class 3A-District 11 district semifinals. Tampa Catholic will face St. Pete Catholic, a 4-2 winner against Clearwater Central Catholic, on Thursday.
In his two previous appearances against Berkeley, Klosicki wasn't sharp.
Not so on Tuesday.
"I had great command of my pitches," Klosicki said. "I got ahead of the batters and my change-up was on."
The Crusaders (19-6) got both runs in the bottom of the fifth. A bases-loaded walk to Shane Rowland scored J.D. Diaz, and Domenic Millan scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cameron Alford.
5A-7: Tampa Prep, McLaughlin win
SPRING HILL - Tampa Prep and Bishop McLaughlin won Class 5A-District 7 semifinals.
Tampa Prep (14-12) used a three-run home run John Arnold and clutch relief pitching by Robbie Daisley to down Clearwater Calvary Christian (13-12) 11-3.
Mike Gonzalez scored four runs and T.J. Wharton blasted a two-run home run as Bishop McLaughlin downed Indian Rocks Christian 13-2 in five innings.
1A-10: Bayshore wins slugfest
TAMPA - Kyle Barber's sixth-inning single drove home Tucker Kasm to give Bayshore Christian a 20-19 victory over Tampa Bay Christian in the Class 1A-District 10 semifinal at Doc Nance Field.
The game's high run total was as much a result of wild pitches and nine combined errors as it was the combined 21 hits. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, Bayshore Christian trailed 15-11, but that's when it rallied to score five runs and go up 16-15.
The Rams came back to tie the game at 19 on John Sayne's two-run single in the sixth but Barber's winning hit in the bottom of that frame - along with three strikeouts by Morgan Capen in the seventh - ended any hopes of anotherTampa Bay Christian rally.
1A-11: Citrus Park falls in semis
Citrus Park Christian's season came to an end Tuesday with a 9-5 loss to Oldsmar Christian in a Class 1A-District 11 semifinal at Canterbury.
Fonzie Diaz went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three stolen bases, and Michael Mauriello and Brandon Hagarty each had RBI triples for the Eagles (11-9).
5A-7: Central tops River Ridge
NEW PORT RICHEY - A combination of clutch pitching and heads-up baserunning keyed Central's 4-2 win over River Ridge in the Class 5A-District 7 semifinals.
