RIVERVIEW - Road work that will hopefully increase traffic safety near Winthrop Town Centre began this past week.
Construction crews began expanding Bloomingdale Avenue medians on the east and west sides of Providence Road on Monday. Their work, scheduled to be completed by Friday, resulted in lane closures for eastbound and westbound traffic on Bloomingdale Avenue between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
According to Hillsborough County's website, the project's purpose is "to better facilitate traffic flow and improve safety" around the busy intersection.
The modification includes a 93-foot extension to the median east of Providence Road - and north of Winthrop Town Centre - as well as a 280-foot expansion of the median west of Providence Road, which is north of a shopping plaza that includes a Walmart Neighborhood Market and fast food restaurants, such as McDonald's, Subway and Wendy's.
The medians will prevent motorists from making dangerous left turns out of both shopping plazas and across Bloomingdale Avenue's busy traffic. Motorists traveling east on Bloomingdale will still be able to access each shopping plaza by turning right, while those heading west will be able to enter by turning south on Providence Road.
