David Byrne coming to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg

David Byrne only seems to perform in Tampa Bay about once a decade — he last came to town in 2008, and before that, 1997. So a local show by the iconic Talking Heads frontman kind of does feel like a once-in-a-lifetime event.

So clear your schedules for late September, because Byrne is coming back to town.

Byrne has just announced a fresh batch of tour dates in support of his acclaimed new album American Utopia, and they include a stop at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on Sept. 30. Tickets start at $59.50. Click here for details.

Byrne will be performing solo and Talking Heads songs with a "12-piece untethered band," which sounds a lot like the marching band-style setup he recently brought to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for an utterly fascinating performance. Check that video out below:

Also exciting is his choice of opener at this show: Tune-Yards. Merrill Garbus's avant-garde alternative act will also be making their first appearance in Tampa Bay, and their eclectic live shows, which can be highly choreographed like Byrne's, are a wonder to behold.

This should be one of this fall's can't-miss shows.
