The Rays are flying back to the Tampa Bay area following Wednesday's game in New York, giving their players and staff a much-wanted opportunity to check on their homes after Hurricane Irma passed through, and expecting to play the Red Sox this weekend at Tropicana Field as planned.
The Trop didn't sustain any major damage, but final okay to play there will come from St. Petersburg and Pinellas County officials, tied primarily to the status of restoring power so traffic lights near the stadium are back up and running.
The series is slated to start Friday night, but there could be the possibility to push it back to Saturday or even Sunday, playing a double-header and or taking advantage of both teams being off on Monday.
Rays manager Kevin Cash said the team members defiinitely want to go home after the extended road trip and he is confident they will be able to play.
There had been previous discussions playing at a neutral site - as they are doing for this series against the Yankees, albeit in New York - or even playing in Boston.
But Cash said any other scenario now but playing at the Trop would "be news to me.'
