UPDATE, 6:43: Cash said the key to how the pieced the lineup together was the opportunity to give Cron (who is struggling) and Duffy (who is doing well) back to back days off. … Looking ahead to the weekend, the Rays will use RHP Ryne Stanek as the opener Friday vs. the Yankees with LHP Ryan Yarbrough to follow, while on Saturday they will use RHP Wilmer Font in more of a bullpen day with the idea for him to go 80-90 pitches and work five innings or so. … Cash said INF Daniel Robertson (hamstring) had no issues in his rehab game Tuesday and should be ready to be activated on Friday. … INF Christian Arroyo (oblique) worked out at the Trop Wednesday and Cash said it appears he won't be out for an extended period. … Astros manager A.J. Hinch had nice things to say about LHP Blake Snell after his Tuesday outing, including that he is worthy of discussion for a spot on the AL All-Star team.
Here is the Astros lineup:
DEVELOPING: Rays manager Kevin Cash's commitment to rest players and rotate playing time resulted in an unusual lineup combination for tonight's series and roadtrip finale vs. the Astros.
Such as having rookie Willy Adames at second base, Joey Wendle at third, Carlos Gomez at DH and both C.J. Cron and Matt Duffy on the bench.
The Adames move sure seems to be the result of their ongoing efforts to showcase SS Adeiny Hechavarria, who lost his job with Adames' promotion and whom they would like to trade before Friday, when INF Daniel Robertson is slated to come off the DL.
The Rays are starting RHP Nathan Eovaldi, a Houston area native who is looking forward to pitching in front of friends and family in his second game at Minute Maid Park.
The Astros are starting RHP Charlie Morton, who has been struggling a bit since a quick start.
