UPDATE. 10:18: Rays OF Mallex Smith said his tight right hamstring is feeling better and he will ramp up activity this week to get ready for the March 29 opener. Manager Kevin Cash said they hope to see him in a minor-league game on Tuesday, and that "we're still okay for (Opening Day0) but we're going to start cutting it close." .. Cash said INF Brad Miller, who played Saturday for the first time since Feb. 23 due to complications from a broken toe, came in feeling good today and will be back in the lineup Monday, "all good things." … Cash said Archer will start today and one more time this spring (likely Friday) with a plan to continue to build up rather than have a 100-plus pitch outing today and then a short one the final time as they have done in the past. … Some Rays hitters are experimenting with a batting helmet that has the extra guard to protect part of their face. Cash said "it's been talked about" given high number of pitchers throwing up in zone but it's still the player's choice.
DEVELOPING: Opening day starter Chris Archer will be on the mound today as the Rays host the Tigers.
Also scheduled to pitch for the Rays today are Yonny Chirinos, Jose Alvarado, Dan Jennings, Chaz Roe and Ian Gibaut.
