UPDATE, 9:59: Span, Williams and Velazquez have all reported to camp, leaving the Rays just Hechavarria shy of a full house.
Velazquez, who played last season at Double-A Montgomery, said he was pleasantly surprised to get a call on Tuesday, while working out near his New York home in the Bronx, that he was a late addition to the camp roster. "I've gotten worse calls," he said.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are set for their fourth workout of the spring on a sunny Saturday, with LHP Blake Snell leading the parade of pitchers scheduled for bullpen sessions.
Though the early days are built around the pitchers' throwing schedule, there is also daily work on fielding fundamentals, and manager Kevin Cash has been pleased with the energy and enthusiasm as the Rays have made several changes to make the drills more competitive – such as a King of the Hill competition on comebackers – and game-like.
All 44 pitchers and catchers are in camp after C Jesus Sucre's visa-delayed arrival on Friday, and all but four of the 24 position players have reported early. SS Adeiny Hechavarria, OF Denard Span, INF Andrew Velazquez (a late addition) and OF Justin Williams are expected to at least check on on Sunday's administrative/report day and work out with the full squad on Monday.
Today's workout starts at 10:30 at the Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte and lasts about 2 1/2 hours.
Others scheduled to throw today include RHP Matt Andriese, RHP Jake Faria RHP Ryne Stanek, RHP Diego Castillo.
