The once disgraced Olympic figure skater is no longer on thin ice in the pop culture world. Harding joined Margot Robbie, who is playing her in the upcoming film I, Tonya, on the red carpet this week.
While Harding plead guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution in the attack of competitor Nancy Kerrigan, cast members of I, Tonya thinks the film will give viewers a different opinion of Harding.
"The audience will still make up their own mind about how much she was involved or not, but I think they'll come away with a little more empathy for her," Allison Janney, who plays Harding's mother, said.
Harding was also the subject of Sufjan Stevens' latest song, Tonya Harding. "She was a reality TV star before such a thing even existed. But she was also simply un-categorical: American's sweetheart with a dark twist. But I believe this is what made her so interesting, and a true American hero. In the face of outrage and defeat, Tonya bolstered shameless resolve and succeeded again and again with all manners of re-invention and self-determination," Stevens also wrote in an essay.
The revival of the sitcom will also include cameos from Sandra Bernhard and Estelle Parsons. Bernhard, who played Roseanne and Jackie's lesbian friend Nancy, will be in two of the nine episodes. Parsons, who plays the sisters' mom, will be in one. The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki also confirmed his return to the show, reprising his role as David.
Larry Nassar, the 54-year-old former U.S. Gymnastics doctor, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography charges. Olympian McKayla Maroney also said Nassar molested her when she was a teenager, and Aly Raisman said Nassar sexually abused her.
The former Voice contestant has been accused of rape. Timothy Heller accused the singer in a tweet on Dec. 4, prompting fans to begin setting their Martinez merch on fire, tweeting that they no longer supported the artist. In response to the allegations, Martinez tweeted, "We both had pain in dealing with our individual demons and the new paths we were forging, but I truly felt we were trying to lift each other up." She also wrote "She never said no to what we chose to do together. And although we parted ways, I am sending her love and light always."
Timothy Heller gave an interview to Newsweek, saying she was conflicted about coming forward because Martinez is seen as an "angel" to her fans.
"So I assumed no one was going to take me seriously if I explained what she did. I've been reading all the #metoo stories, and though I'm obviously in support of the people coming forward, I wasn't sure if my story of being assaulted fit."
