HomeTeam Hot Shots: Nominations for Sept. 16-22

Each week, our HomeTeam staffers nominate male and female Hot Shot athletes from each of the counties we cover. Then we turn the voting over to readers. These nominations span Saturday, Sept. 16-Friday, Sept. 22. Read up on all of our nominees then vote until noon Monday.

Female nominees

Mackenzie Dufresne, volleyball, Tarpon Springs: The junior outside hitter had a total of 30 kills and 12 aces in the Spongers’ three wins this week, which included a five-game win over Osceola. The Spongers are 9-0.

Lindsey Leadbetter, swimming, Northside Christian: The senior showed off her versatility as a freestyle swimmer at the Tampa Bay Classic, winning the 500 free in a meet record 5:04.20 and the 50 free in 24.17.

Jessie Mooney, volleyball, Mitchell: The senior outside hitter had 16 kills, three aces and 17 digs in a five-game win over Wiregrass Ranch. She is second on the team in digs (102) and third in kills (70) so far this season.

Christin Rockway, swimming, Tampa Catholic: The Indiana recruit was dominant in her individual events at the Tampa Bay Classic, winning the 200 individual medley in a meet-record 2:01.39 and the 100 fly in 56.50.

McKenna Smith, swimming, Academy at the Lakes: A state qualifier as a middle-schooler last year, the freshman has continued her meteoric rise and won the 100 free in 52.83 at last weekend’s Tampa Bay Classic.

Sydney Walsh, volleyball, Tampa Bay HEAT: The senior outside hitter had 19 kills and five blocks in a 3-1 win over Bishop McLaughlin. Walsh has 69 kills for the 7-1 HEAT.

Male nominees

Bryant Beacham, football, Sunlake: With Sunlake trailing 14-3 in the third quarter, Beacham helped ignite a rally by recovering a fumble that led to a go-ahead score in a 37-20 win over Land O’Lakes. He also ran for 143 yards and scored two touchdowns as Sunlake extended its win streak to eight games in the Butter Bowl.

Isaiah Bellamy, football, Largo: The senior defensive end had a 60-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that proved to be the winning score in a 13-10 win over Countryside.

Fabian Burnett, football, Nature Coast: The sophomore quarterback threw for 116 yards on 9-of-12 passing and also carried 19 times for 114 yards to help the Sharks to a 19-7 win over Crystal River on Friday.

Ryaan Hatoum, swimming, Berkeley Prep: The junior was a point-scoring machine at the Tampa Bay Classic, taking first in the 100 breast (1:00.77) and swimming legs on the winning 200 medley relay (1:40.02) and 200 free relay (1:29.26) to help the Bucs win the boys team title for a ninth straight year.  

Larry Hodges, football, Jesuit: The tight end, one of the area’s top recruits, had two touchdown catches in the second half, including a sensational one-hander in a 28-14 win over previously undefeated Ridge Community. It was Jesuit’s first win of the season after an 0-2 start.

Clark Lea, golf, Clearwater Central Catholic: The senior won the East Lake Invitational at Lansbrook Golf Club last weekend with 2-under 69. He also won the Outback Invitational at East Lake Woodlands on Aug. 26 with 2-under 70.
