Bucs’ Mike Evans donates $10,000 to childhood friend’s recovery

As a Texas man fights for his life after an accidental shooting on Easter Sunday, Bucs receiver Mike Evans has stepped up to help his childhood friend, donating $10,000 to a GoFundMe account for Devyn Holmes.

Holmes and two other people were in a parked car outside a Houston gas station and broadcasting a Facebook Live video on April 1 when authorities say Cassandra Damper accidentally fired a shot, which hit Holmes in the head. He remains in stable condition in a Houston hospital, while Damper has been charged with aggravated assault and tampering with evidence, accused of also wiping gunshot residue from her hands.

Evans went to middle and high school with Holmes, and made the largest donation in a fundraising effort that has topped $38,000 toward Holmes' medical costs and future care.

"That's what the world should be about, helping others," Evans told Houston TV station ABC13. "We saw on video that he was shot in the head, and he survived that. He's a true warrior."

Evans, entering his fifth season with the Bucs, just signed an $82 million extension that makes him one of the NFL's highest paid receivers. He has topped 1,000  receiving yards in each of his first four seasons, only the third player in NFL history to do so.
