Our '80s historian Kevin Wuench goes to the Deep South today with his music lesson:
Like your AOR with a touch of Texas/Louisiana blues swamp? Then you should try some Mason Ruffner with his sweltering Gypsy Blood.
Mason Ruffner grew up in Texas but has adopted New Orleans as his home. In 1987, he released his second album entitled Gypsy Blood with the title track becoming a Mainstream Rock Track hit in 1987.
Crossroads was the 1986 movie in which Ralph Macchio takes to the Mississippi Delta to find his guitar destiny. One year later, the video for Gypsy Blood starts off with Ruffner facing his crossroads and flipping his guitar pick to find his course. Ruffner (who really does have a gold tooth) then travels the rural roads of Louisiana going from town-to-town playing guitar and stealing hearts all to a great driving-along, knee-slapping groove.
Ruffner continues to make the music he loves in the city he loves – New Orleans.
