The Weeknd set to play Straz Center in Tampa
Alternative R&B provocateur The Weeknd will perform in Tampa for the first time when his aptly-named The Fall Tour stops at the Straz Center Sept. 26. Tickets, ranging from $48.50 to $175, go on sale Friday through strazcenter.org, by calling (813) 229-7827 or visiting the venue's box office at 1010 N Macinnes Place. The notoriously interview-shy singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has been gaining fame for his left-of-center sound since the release of his free mixtape "House of Balloons," which landed on many critics' best-of-the-year lists in 2011. Singing in a falsetto that has earned him comparisons to Michael Jackson, his music is full of unconventional arrangements, morose, moody production and anxious lyrics about sex, drugs and partying. After appearing on hit songs "Crew Love" with fellow Toronto native Drake, and "Remember You" with Wiz Khalifa, The Weeknd signed with Universal Republic, which re-released "House of Balloons" with two other Weeknd mixtapes. That set, titled "Trilogy," reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in 2012. His new album "Kiss Land" is due to come out at the end of the summer.
