Rays will don disco-era duds for Saturday game
The Tampa Bay Rays will be going back to the 1970s fashionwise – sort of – on June 30. The team unveiled a flashback uniform in the style of other major league uniforms in 1979 for its 10th "Turn Back the Clock" game. In a news release, the Rays described the outfit as "fully embracing the style of the era while keeping the Rays modern colors. A patch on the left sleeve of the jersey features a City of St. Petersburg seal that was used in 1979." The opposing team, the Detroit Tigers, will wear a uniform based on its 1979 road jersey.Completing the '70s theme, the band Earth, Wind and Fire will perform after the game. The Rays retro jerseys will be auctioned off on raysbaseball.com following the game with proceeds benefitting the Moffitt Cancer Center and the Rays Baseball Foundation. Merchandise will be available June 25 at the Rays Team Store at Tropicana Field, Rays Pro Shop, 400 N. Tampa St.; Sports Fan Attic; Lids Locker Room and other participating retailers, or online at raysbaseball.com.
