Riverview family catches glimpse of fireball that flew across Florida

RIVERVIEW — A Hillsborough County family was among dozens of people who reported seeing a fireball shoot across the Florida sky earlier this week.

And they have the stunning video to prove it.

Alex Russell had recently installed the security camera that caught the light zip across the sky and then burst, according to News10 WTSP.

The American Meteor Society said they received more than 55 reports of the fireball event on Tuesday around 6:35 p.m. The sightings stretched across the state from Jacksonville to Key West.

Russell and his daughter, 10-year-old Adriana, were outside when they saw the bright light. They ran inside to check out the security camera footage.

That’s when wife Heather Fox started recording and streaming to Facebook live as the family reacted to the wild video.

"I’m just in awe" Fox said as she watched on. "Man, it is so bright. It’s got to be a meteor."

Uncertain, she asked her Facebook friends to help her and her family know for sure what they just saw.

A fireball is a bright meteor, according to the American Meteor Society. A bolide is a special type of meteor that explodes into a flash at the end, which seems to be what Russell caught on video.

If you ever see a fireball, you can report it to the society on on its website.
