Buccaneers sign draft pick DT Akeem Spence
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers reduced their number of unsigned 2013 draft picks to two on Wednesday when they signed fourth-round selection Akeem Spence to a four-year contract.
The 6-foot-1, 307-pound Spence is expected to start at nose tackle, a vacancy created when Roy Miller left as a free agent for Jacksonville.
A former prep heavyweight state wrestling champion out of Fort Walton Beach, Spence played at the University of Illinois, where he totaled 186 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
Spence also recorded two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 26 quarterback pressures during his three-year career with the Illini, which included earning places on the Lombardi and Outland Trophy watch lists.
Tampa Bay's only unsigned 2013 draft picks are cornerback Johnthan Banks and quarterback Mike Glennon, the second- and third-round picks, respectively.
