A Tampa woman who accidentally swallowed a diamond at a fundraiser will be in the national spotlight tonight when she appears on CBS' “Late Show with David Letterman.” Miriam Tucker, 80, was at a Tampa Woman's Club charity event April 20 for a fundraiser involving diamonds and champagne. For $20, you could buy one of 400 flutes of champagne. One flute had a one-carat, $5,000 diamond donated by Continental Wholesale Diamonds in Tampa, the others had cubic zirconia in them. Tucker swallowed the gem in her glass but kept silent, figuring the odds that she had actually swallowed the real diamond were remote. After all the other glasses were checked and found to have cubic zirconias in them, the truth finally dawned on her. As luck would have it, Tucker already had a routine colonoscopy scheduled for the following Monday. The doctor recovered the diamond from her colon.
There will be a watch party for Tucker's appearance on the show beginning at 10 p.m. at the Fox Jazz Café, 5401 W. Kennedy Blvd. The show airs locally at 11:35 p.m. on WTSP-TV.
