Charlie Crist to appear at event for Democratic St. Pete candidate

In another sign of Charlie Crist's new Democratic bona fides, the former Republican Florida Governor is lending his support to Darden Rice, a left-leaning candidate for the St. Petersburg City Council.

Crist, who grew up in St. Petersburg, is scheduled to make a special appearance at a fundraiser for Rice at Cassis American Brasserie in downtown St. Petersburg on May 21. After a much-publicized switch to the Democratic Party, Crist is regarded as a front runner to win its nomination and challenge incumbent Rick Scott in 2014.

Rice, a former president of the St. Petersburg Chapter of the League of Women Voters, is running for the District 4 seat against neurosurgeon David McKalip and Carolyn Ann Fries, a mechanical engineer and entrepreneur.
