WESLEY CHAPEL — Membership warehouse Costco has filed preliminary plans to build its fourth Tampa Bay store in Pasco County at the new Cypress Creek Town Center.
While there hasn’t been a formal announcement, this is the first major retailer linked to the site, which is located at Interstate 75 - State Road 56 interchange. Outlet mall developer Simon Properties is currently building a 1.1-million-square-foot Premium Outlet mall and plans to open in October 2015. Simon officials had previously announced that luxury retailer Saks Inc. would anchor the mall with a Saks “Off 5th” store, but they have been tight-lipped about other tenants since closing on the property two months ago.
Simon spokesman Les Morris said an announcement regarding the outlet mall could come as early as next week.
Company officials have scheduled a pre-application meeting with county planners for Dec. 16. A representative of the Richard E. Jacobs Group will also be present at the meeting.
The 153,041-square-foot Costco store is slated for 18 acres on the south side of S.R. 56, leaving the Jacobs Group, with 32 acres that are zoned for restaurants, retail stores and a movie theater.
Costco Wholesale Corp., based near Seattle, operates an international chain of membership warehouses. The chain credits itself with carrying name brand merchandise at prices lower than traditional wholesale or retail stores.
Costco has about 460 locations nationwide, including two in the Tampa area, in Brandon and Clearwater, and a proposed store near the Westchase community in northwest Hillsborough. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
Tampa-based Sierra Properties, still owns the 40-acre parcel closest to the interstate, which is approved for up to two hotels. Sierra Properties also owns 204 acres on the north side of S.R. 56 and is in lease negotiations with several restaurants, a sporting goods retailer and a department store.
