Henson Earns National Honor

Sickles senior basketball player John Henson has been named a first-team PARADE All-American.Henson, a 6-foot-10 center who has signed with North Carolina and is rated the No. 3 prospect in the country by ESPN, averaged 17.8 points, 12.3 rebounds and 6.1 blocks per game while leading the Gryphons to the Class 6A regional semifinals this season.It is the latest of many honors for Henson, who will play in the McDonald's All-American Game on Wednesday in Miami.FOOTBALL: Alonso junior QB C.J. Bennett was named MVP of the invitation-only Nike Training Camp held at the University of Miami on Sunday.Participating with more than 300 players, including about 25 quarterbacks, Bennett bested the others in a series of drills that included hitting different targets and running through a series of drops.Also, Brandon senior lineman Danny Gonzalez has signed with Marian College, an NAIA program in Indiana.Gonzalez, a 6-foot-1, 317-pounder, missed the entire 2008 regular season after suffering a torn ACL during the Eagles' Kickoff Classic against Sickles. He started for the Eagles the previous two seasons.SOCCER: Bloomingdale junior Kara Buono and Plant junior Amy Werdine have committed to Appalachian State.That makes three local players who have committed to the Mountaineers, with Tampa Prep junior Jordan Hatton having already committed for the 2010 season.All three play club soccer for RSL Florida.Nick Williams, Adam Adkins, Katherine Smith, Nick Murray
