Rival fans and skeptics tend to revel in the misfortunes of athletes who run into trouble with the law. But when those incidents border on the absurd, the gentle ribbing can become that much more amplified.
So it comes as no surprise that creative types had a field day with the news that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was cited for shoplifting after walking out of a Publix without paying for $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish.
As soon as news of the incident started making its way through social media, digitally altered photos began popping up on Twitter showing Winston in various poses. Just about all of the memes mixed Winston with a crab-related image, either running from a Publix with a crab in hand, posing in front of a boatload of crabs, or — our favorite — holding crab legs in place of the BCS national championship trophy.
The tweets were just as humorous. A small sampling:
@AlligatorArmy: Jameis Winston steals crab legs from Publix during a week when chicken tender subs are on sale? GOTTA QUESTION THAT DECISION-MAKING.
@carsoncornelius: Jameis Winston arrested for stealing crab legs from a grocery store ... One could call that... SHELLFISH. HAHAHAHAHAHA
@adamputnam: Everyone loves #FreshFromFlorida crab legs.
@BrianHamiltonSI: Really wonder about Jameis Winston's decision making. This entire episode was high-bisque, low reward.
