Turtle makes trek from Keys to Vegas
MARATHON - A 320-pound green sea turtle has arrived in Las Vegas, following a 2,400-mile trip from the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital. OD began the trip early today with a three-hour ride in the hospital's ambulance to a FedEx plane in Fort Lauderdale. The A300 flew OD in a special crate to Memphis and another FedEx aircraft completed the air transfer to Vegas. For almost five years the turtle was cared for in the hospital's 100,000-gallon rehabilitation pool. The reptile cannot be released due to an irreparable collapsed lung. OD's new Vegas home is The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Resort. The turtle is to be quarantined for 45 days before being transferred to the aquarium's 1.3-million-gallon exhibition tank.OD was named for the Key Largo dive boat that rescued it in 2008.
