Tampa Tribune reporter Michelle Bearden won four awards at the 2013 Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism competition Saturday in Malabar.
Bearden, who covers faith and values for The Tampa Tribune, TBO.com and WFLA-TV, placed first in serious feature writing for newspapers in Florida in the Class A division (more than 90,000 circulation). She also placed third in light features, religion writing and commentary.
She was recognized for several collections of stories and columns, including an in-depth profile on the life of a high-profile homeless woman in South Tampa, the story of an 84-year-old preacher still leading his church after a half-century and a community’s response to a young woman who died in a motorcycle accident. Her columns ranged from reconnecting to grade-school classmates after 44 years and how a winning baseball season healed a riot-ravaged Detroit.
The Florida Press Club, founded in 1951, represents newspapers all over the state.
