The intersection of Tampa and Twiggs streets is captured in the 1974 “then” photograph submitted by Tampa historian and author John V. Cinchett. Pictured is the Saltz Shoe store, a downtown fixture for nearly 30 years, and Red Cross Shoes, another popular retailer.
According to Cinchett, these businesses were among the last retail stores located downtown in the 1970s. Across the street, on the northeast corner, stands the former Strand Theater building, and looking farther north is the iconic Maas Brothers building. In later years, Maas Brothers acquired the theater and converted it into retail space.
Forty years later, the former Saltz Shoe store is now home to Eddie & Sam’s N.Y. Pizza, and the space where the Strand Theater once stood is a parking lot.
