Hundreds of boisterous pirates sailed across Hillsborough Bay to downtown Tampa on Saturday, scrambled ashore and captured the city — to the delight of its populace.
The annual Gasparilla festivities — luncheon, invasion, parade and festival — unfolded in high-spirited style on a crisp day beneath blazing blue skies. Seafarers and landlubbers alike reveled in the familiar splendor, rowdiness and fun.
Tampa police reported three felony arrests and 39 misdemeanor arrests; of those 12 were for underage drinking while the rest for various offenses such as disorderly conduct and theft. There were 63 citations for open container violations and seven for boating while under the influence.
Tampa Fire Rescue said it responded to 106 medical calls. Of those, 41 required transport by ambulance, but none were for life-threatening or critical situations.
