Hearing to discuss new YMCA on county land in Riverview

Hillsborough residents get a chance Tuesday to voice their positions on the plan to put a YMCA on county property adjacent to the Vance Vogel Sports Complex in Riverview. The public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the East Bay High School auditorium, 7710 Old Big Bend Road in Gibsonton. Hillsborough County has earmarked $2 million for the project and would lease the land to the nonprofit for a nominal amount. The YMCA would be responsible for construction costs, currently estimated at between $6 million and $8 million. Preliminary plans include indoor recreational facilities, an aquatic center, various athletic field and related improvements. The YMCA is already offers swim lessons in Summerfield, youth sports at the South Shore United Methodist Church in Riverview and senior wellness programs in partnership with South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center.
